The month of May is celebrated as International Internal Audit Month. As part of activities marking the climax of the Internal Audit Awareness Month, the Internal Audit Office of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) organised a staff durbar at the Internal Audit Conference Room on 30th May 2025.
The durbar was chaired by the Internal Auditor, Mr. Moses Tsiquaye, who warmly welcomed all staff and expressed his appreciation for their prompt response and active participation.
He extended special thanks to the representatives of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), Ashanti Regional Chapter in the persons of Mrs. Regina Durowaa Owusu Asare, Treasurer and Rev. John Kwaku Agyemang, Member - both staff of the KNUST Internal Audit Office - for their significant contributions to the successful organization of the event.
Speaking during the durbar, Rev. John Kwaku Agyemang highlighted that the event served as the climax of the Internal Audit Awareness Month. He took the opportunity to remind all internal auditors of their core mandate, which is to maintain independence and provide assurance.
Mr. Tsiquaye reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the professional development of staff. He encouraged them to take advantage of available opportunities by investing their time and resources in continuous learning. He explained that while the Office covers the cost of some budgeted courses, programmes and conferences, the Office welfare scheme can offer soft loans to staff who wish to do short courses or attend conferences not captured in the budget. The loan is supposed to be repaid based on the arrangement with the Executives.
Mrs. Regina Durowaa Owusu Asare urged members interested in pursuing the IIA certification exams to take advantage of the current window of opportunity given by the Institute of Chartered Accountants (Ghana) - ICAG. She also encouraged all staff to participate in short courses and workshops organized by the IIA and other professional bodies to enhance their knowledge and skills.
She emphasised the importance of internal auditors projecting their professional roles and contributions wherever they find themselves.
Other contributors at the durbar encouraged members to uphold the principles outlined on the IIA flyer circulated during the Awareness Month. They also advised colleagues to demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and teamwork, especially through effective coordination in executing their duties.
Additionally, staff were encouraged to learn from their superiors to stay abreast with modern trends in auditing.
A concern was raised about the need to sensitize some academic staff on the mandate and responsibilities of the Internal Audit Office, as there appeared to be some misconceptions or gaps about the auditor’s role.
In concluding remarks, Rev. Agyemang thanked all attendees for their participation and informed them that the 2025 International Conference for Internal Auditors is scheduled to take place in Toronto, Canada in July. He expressed hope that more staff would seize such opportunities in the future.
Mr. Moses Tsiquaye expressed gratitude for the encouraging turnout and wished that future celebrations would witness even greater participation from the University Management.
